Packing can reduce traction, lower ride height and make the rear feel dead or harsh in repeated hits.
What packing feels like
A packing shock does not extend far enough before the next bump. The rear rides lower in its travel, feels dead or harsh, loses traction and can kick because it has less travel left for the next hit.
Common causes
Too much rebound damping is the usual suspect, but spring rate, linkage friction, low gas pressure and tired oil can create similar symptoms. Fixing packing means restoring recovery speed without making the rear loose or springy.
Workshop checklist
- Count rebound clicks from fully closed and compare them with a known baseline.
- Test repeated bumps where the rear has to recover several times in a row.
- Inspect linkage bearings and shock service condition before changing valving.
- Open rebound in small steps and stop if the rear starts kicking or topping out.
