Last week we spoke about how using incorrect spring rates for your weight and use is detrimental to how your bike handles. A big part of that is simple: you, as the rider, have mass. On a motorcycle, that rider mass is a massive percentage of the total bike-and-rider system.

That means even a small change in rider weight can have a large percentage effect on total mass, suspension balance and handling. A motorcycle does not carry a rider as a minor accessory. The rider is a major part of the sprung mass the suspension has to control.

Now let’s go the other way and talk about damping.

Springs hold the bike up. Damping controls the motion.

In the simplest suspension model, the bike and rider are treated as a mass supported by a spring and controlled by a damper. The spring rate decides how much force the suspension produces for a given displacement. Damping decides how much force the suspension produces for a given velocity.

The full equations are in the book and go into the detail properly, but the practical target is simple enough: control the suspension so it can return from movement toward zero velocity in the shortest useful time without oscillating, bouncing or losing traction.

That is true in both compression and rebound. The suspension is always moving somewhere, and the damper’s job is to manage that movement without turning the wheel into a pogo stick or a brick.

Why travel and velocity matter

Spring calculations use suspension travel and the desired sag point because we are deciding where the bike should sit in its stroke. Damping calculations also use travel because we are controlling how quickly the suspension can move through that distance and return to a stable state.

At any point in the stroke, and at any shaft velocity, we can calculate a damping target for the bike and rider system. Change the mass, change the spring, change the tyre weight or change the unsprung mass, and the required damping target changes as well.

Where it all goes pear-shaped: the rider

Some riders like firmer damping. Some like a plusher feel. Some like a slow rebound, which both dumbfounds me and causes lost traction. Some riders want more spring. Some want less. That is normal rider preference, but preference does not cancel physics.

Just like you cannot fix a bad spring choice with clickers or preload, you cannot make a bad damping curve good again with clickers either.

What a clicker actually changes

Changing clickers does not change the shim stack. It does not alter the clamp shim, crossover, face shim stiffness, piston port area or the main valving architecture.

Changing clickers changes the volume and velocity of oil passing through the clicker orifice. In simple terms, the suspension bleeds more or less fluid around the main circuit relative to the centre point of the clicker range. That bleed effect can be calculated with an orifice equation, but the workshop takeaway is simple: clickers are a fine adjustment, not a revalve.

If the damping curve is fundamentally wrong, the correct answer is not to keep winding adjusters until the screw slots wear out. The correct answer is to change the valving so the adjusters come back into a useful working range.

When clickers become useless

The exact point depends on the adjuster design, the orifice size and the taper of the needle. But as a practical rule, if you are within about three clicks of fully closed or within about three clicks of fully open, you are outside the useful tuning window.

At that point, the bike is telling you something. It needs a shim change to bring the clickers back toward the centre of their range.

Most shops will charge for that adjustment. At Mountain Race Shop, if we have revalved the units for the original owner, or if the change is done with a service, we bring the clickers back into range as part of looking after the setup properly.

But — and this is a big but — the springs still have to be right

The springs you use still need to suit the rider’s weight, use, speed and riding style. Damping cannot rescue a spring package that is wrong for the job.

And riders are terrible at being honest with this.

If you are 75 kg and you put on 10 kg, your suspension is going to feel soft and soggy. If you then screw the adjusters in to firm it up, it will often feel harsh because you are adding hydraulic resistance to cover a mechanical support problem.

If you are 110 kg and you lose 10 kg, then unscrew the clickers to soften the bike, it can feel overly stiff and harsh because the spring and damping package are no longer matched to the actual load and use.

The information you give your suspension shop matters

This brings us to one of the most important points in the whole process: the information you give your suspension shop dictates the quality of the work you get back.

Your actual weight, riding gear, bike model, fuel load, skill level, terrain, speed, luggage, tyre choice and what the bike is actually doing all matter. If the starting information is wrong, the setup target will be wrong.

It is just the way it is.
